Gurney J. Bush Introduce
For over five decades, when residents, businesses, and municipalities across Indianapolis and Central Indiana have faced their toughest drain, sewer, or septic challenges, they have turned to one established local name: Gurney J. Bush. Since 1971, this family-owned company has built a stellar reputation not just as a plumber, but as a premier sewer and drain cleaning contractor with a specialized focus on the underground infrastructure that keeps properties running smoothly. In an industry increasingly dominated by large, corporate entities, Gurney J. Bush remains a highly respected, locally focused shop known for its honesty, expertise, and rapid, 24-hour service.
Unlike general plumbing services that only tackle simple fixture leaks, Gurney J. Bush excels in the complex and often urgent issues related to main sewer lines, septic systems, and serious drain blockages. They have invested in high-powered equipment and advanced diagnostic technology—such as specialized high-definition cameras and hydro-jetting machines—to accurately solve problems from a simple clogged kitchen sink to a major sewage backup or collapsed main sewer line. Their deep experience means they understand the unique challenges presented by Indianapolis's older homes and intricate downtown plumbing systems, often providing a practical, cost-effective solution when others suggest expensive, destructive excavation.
Whether you are dealing with a slow-moving bathroom drain, a recurring sewer backup, or require routine maintenance for a commercial grease trap, Gurney J. Bush provides the specialized service needed to protect your property from damage and disruption. Their commitment to being available around the clock—365 days a year—ensures that when a plumbing emergency strikes, Hoosiers have a reliable, expert team ready to respond quickly.

Services Offered
Gurney J. Bush specializes in all facets of drainage, sewer, and septic maintenance and repair, serving residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal clients with equal proficiency. Their specialized equipment is designed to handle problems of varying sizes and complexities.
- 24/7 Emergency Drain Service: Immediate response for urgent issues like sewage backup, flooding, or completely blocked main lines.
- Advanced Drain Cleaning: Utilizing powerful methods like Hydro Jetting (or water jetting), which blasts blockages—including tree roots, heavy grease, gravel, and sludge—with water pressures ranging from 2,000 psi up to 4,000 psi. They also use cable machines (snakes/augers) and mini-jet cleaning for smaller, interior drains (kitchen sink, bathroom drain, showers and sinks).
- Sewer and Pipe Inspection (TV Televising): Using high-definition camera inspection technology to diagnose the exact cause and location of problems within pipes and sewer lines before recommending costly repairs. This takes the guesswork out of the repair process and is essential for line repair.
- Sewer Repair and Line Repair: Routine sewer inspection and repair services based on camera findings, addressing issues like cracked, collapsed, or leaking pipes caused by soil shifting, corrosion, or tree root infiltration.
- Septic and Wastewater Solutions: Comprehensive septic system services, including Septic Tank Pumping, pumping of lift stations, and manholes. All operations adhere to strict regulations set by the Indiana State Board of Health and the U.S. EPA.
- Grease Trap/Pit Cleaning: Specialized pumping and cleaning for commercial and industrial facilities to maintain compliance and prevent drain field failures.
- Line Location and Clean Outs: Precisely locating buried sewer/drain lines and installing necessary cleanout access points to facilitate future maintenance and inspection.
- General Plumbing Services: Handling standard plumbing needs, including gas line work, water heater maintenance (including tankless water heater), and water softener installation.
- Contracting for All Property Types: Providing services for residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal properties throughout Central Indiana.
Features / Highlights
The long-standing success of Gurney J. Bush is directly attributable to its core operational features and commitment to customer trust—a rare commodity in emergency services. These highlights define their unique value to the Indiana community.
- Decades of Local Experience: Operating continuously since 1971, the company possesses nearly 50 years of specialized experience in Central Indiana’s sewer and drain infrastructure, including expertise with older cast-iron sewer systems.
- Reliable 24-Hour Emergency Service: The peace of mind that comes from knowing a contractor is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with a live answering service for after-hours calls, is invaluable when facing a sudden sewage backup.
- Honesty and Integrity (No Upselling): Repeat customer testimonials frequently praise the company, and key personnel like Tom Means, for being "honest and not trying to sell you something" you don't need, a significant contrast to larger, commission-driven corporate competitors.
- Advanced Diagnostic Technology: They remove the guesswork from sewer repair by using high-quality TV camera inspection and televising to pinpoint problems like pipe damage or clogs, ensuring the recommended solution is precise and necessary.
- High-Velocity Hydro Jetting: Their superior drain cleaning capability, using up to 4,000 psi water jets, ensures the complete removal of severe blockages, often eliminating the need for more expensive, traditional pipe replacement in cases where tree roots or heavy debris are the culprits.
- Specialists in Drain and Sewer: By focusing heavily on sewer main, drain work, and septic systems, they offer a level of specialized knowledge that a general plumber might not possess, often providing a practical fix where others only quote full, destructive replacement.
- Commitment to Compliance: Their septic tank pumping and hauling operations strictly comply with all regulations from the Indiana State Board of Health and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
- Trusted by Property Professionals: They are consistently recommended by professionals involved in renovation projects and property management across downtown Indianapolis due to their reliability in saving expensive deals from sewer complications.

What is worth choosing
For Indiana property owners, choosing Gurney J. Bush means opting for reliability, specialized expertise, and honest service over corporate overhead and aggressive sales tactics. In emergency situations, such as a major sewage backup, their 24/7 availability and quick response are critical. Customers report that where larger, corporate companies failed to solve a problem and quoted tens of thousands of dollars for total yard excavation, Gurney J. Bush—often through the efforts of key individuals like Tom Means—was able to diagnose and flush the line for a fraction of the cost, saving both money and property damage.
The company’s dedication to using sewer camera inspections and high-velocity hydro jetting is their greatest advantage. They do not guess; they confirm the problem with video evidence. This diagnostic approach, combined with the capability to blast away even the toughest clogs, often results in a simple, effective, and less invasive solution compared to the 'tear up the yard' approach favored by less specialized contractors. This pragmatic, problem-solving mindset, coupled with over 50 years of dedicated service to Central Indiana, makes Gurney J. Bush the trusted, local choice for serious drain, sewer, and septic issues.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I use Tom Means and Gurney Bush for all my renovation projects. They are honest and not trying to sell you something. They come jet and camera my sewer lines and have saved deals and saved me tens of thousands. I refer them to everyone I know and they always thank me.
August 18 · Ryan Moeller11/10 rating. We had water coming into the basement of our broadripple house. A larger, corporate company came over twice this weekend, stated they couldn’t fix it easily, and quoted over $20K to tear up my whole yard. They also charged $900+ for these visits without fixing the problem. Tom Means and his coworker showed up at 9pm on a Monday night, worked until 11pm, and flushed my drains for $850. They were extremely professional and friendly as well, even in the late hours of a Monday. Please call them for any plumbing needs! You will not be disappointed.
July 08 · Nick TuttleCompliments to Dave and Jake who were very conscientious in their work, and did a great job at checking the pipes and fixing the leak. They were professional, courteous, and went the extra mile. I called Gurney Bush in the morning and was told they would send someone in the afternoon, but Dave and Jake arrived the same morning around 11:00 AM. Pricing was reasonable as well. Great experience!
December 09 · dost1517My husband did the work not Gurney bush inc . They took the 150 and the technician told me he didn’t do this type of work. I asked questions and he said I don’t know I just stuck a pole down and it was full . I told them what my husband did and then they claimed they did part of what my husband did . So we paid 150 for 5 min service . The guy said I didn’t need to pay the 150 but came back 5 minutes later and said his dispatch is making him get the money . This is my husband before and after and the guy was wrong the technician was wrong it was not full and did not not cleaned . I am just upset about the lieing . The company could of refunded money but just sent me to warranty company to deal with them but I didn’t pay them . The technician said he didn’t feel he did anything so didn’t think he needed to collect 150 and the lady at place said she took 150 thinking they were going to come out and clean the septic but we called them and told them we fixed it so no one came out to clean . I just hate the lieing .
April 05 · Jordan ChoateThis company has gone above and beyond in so many ways. I cannot sing their praise enough on workmanship, integrity and helpfulness. We hired Gurney Busch to complete a project for The St Nicholas Neighbor in Need Foundation. They worked professionally, quickly and accurately. Helping improve the quality of life for our family in need.I had a second experience with them on plumbing project for my mom, once again, they went above, and beyond to make sure my needs were met and questions answered. We dealt with Jacquetta and she was outstanding. Her follow through and customer service was fantastic!I highly recommend this company.
