United Meters Introduce
When Illinois municipalities and major utility companies require large-scale, specialized plumbing work, particularly the installation and maintenance of essential infrastructure components like water and gas meters, they often turn to highly specialized contractors. United Meters, Inc., based in Morris, IL, is one such entity, operating not as a traditional residential emergency plumber, but as an expert in utility-mandated meter change-out programs. Their core business revolves around the crucial task of replacing aging, inefficient utility meters with modern, accurate technology, including Automated Meter Reading (AMR) and Smart Meter systems.
The importance of this work cannot be overstated for Illinois communities. Outdated water meters can lose significant accuracy over time, leading to wasted natural resources and inaccurate municipal revenue capture. By providing efficient, large-scale meter change-out programs, United Meters, Inc. plays a vital role in water conservation and ensuring fair, accurate billing for local residents and businesses. Their expertise allows local governments and utilities, such as Nicor Gas and various Illinois municipalities like Joliet and Lake Forest, to quickly modernize their infrastructure without diverting their own limited personnel and equipment.
However, as a utility contractor, the customer experience can differ significantly from that of a small, traditional plumbing company. Public data indicates that while the company's technical work—specifically, meter installation—is essential and often mandated by local government, there have been concerns raised by homeowners in their service areas regarding communication, scheduling practices, and staff professionalism during these compulsory replacement projects. For example, some customers have reported issues with scheduling and a perceived lack of consideration for personal circumstances during home visits. Other serious concerns have been raised regarding the provision of basic technician information (like license numbers and names) and adherence to state laws, such as having "one call tickets" for excavation work. This suggests that while United Meters excels at the logistical demands of massive utility projects, local users should be prepared to be proactive in communicating their needs and ensuring full transparency regarding the work.
It is important for any Illinois resident receiving notification from their utility that United Meters will be performing work to understand the nature of the project. These projects are typically mandated and at no cost to the resident, focusing strictly on meter replacement or relocation for utility purposes. They are not designed for general plumbing repairs within the home’s interior plumbing system, which is the responsibility of the homeowner. United Meters prides itself on using licensed plumbers for the quality installation work, assuring that the actual pipe connection meets state standards, which is a key technical safeguard for customers.
United Meters, Inc. is headquartered in the city of Morris, Illinois. This strategic location in Grundy County allows the company to efficiently manage and deploy its crews across a wide service area throughout the state, including major municipal projects in the Chicagoland area and beyond.
The main office location is: 798 Gore Rd, Morris, IL 60450, USA. While the physical address is in Morris, it should be noted that the company operates primarily as a mobile, project-based contractor, with staff dispatched to locations as diverse as Joliet and Lake Forest based on municipal and utility contracts. Their accessibility is defined by their ability to manage complex scheduling for thousands of meter replacements within a contracted region, rather than a walk-in retail model. The use of clearly marked vehicles and the requirement for installers to carry specific identification are safety protocols put in place to verify the legitimacy of personnel visiting private properties.
United Meters, Inc. specializes almost exclusively in utility-related metering and infrastructure work. While they employ licensed plumbers for the actual connection and repair work, their business focus is on large-scale governmental or utility contracts rather than typical homeowner plumbing emergencies.
Their primary services include:
- Water Meter Change-Out Programs: Implementing full water meter replacement projects for municipalities to upgrade old, inefficient meters with new technology, including ultrasonic meters and those compliant with low-lead requirements.
- Smart Meter Installation (Water and Gas): Installation and commissioning of Advanced Meter Reading (AMR) and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) systems that use wireless technology for automatic, remote data collection, enhancing accuracy and conservation efforts.
- Gas Meter Relocation and Tie-In: Work contracted by gas utility providers (such as Nicor Gas) to move existing gas meters from inside homes to exterior locations and connect the home to new gas service lines, often including a safety check and appliance relight process.
- Meter Stock Control and Logistics: Managing the inventory, storage, and deployment of thousands of new meter units for large projects.
- Utility Project Management: Providing comprehensive project oversight, including scheduling, budget management, and coordination of large-scale deployments of metering systems across entire communities.
- Licensed Plumbing Connections: Utilizing licensed plumbers to perform the critical connections between the utility meter and the home’s internal plumbing system.
- Repair Services: Providing necessary repairs and maintenance directly related to the water and gas metering systems they install and service, ensuring meters remain functional and accurate over time.
United Meters’ operational model and features are geared toward utility efficiency and large-project competence:
- Highly Specialized Focus: Their business is solely focused on meter replacement projects, providing an unparalleled level of logistical and technical expertise in this niche.
- Licensed Plumber Workforce: The company assures quality installation work by utilizing licensed plumbers for all essential connections and installs, a crucial factor for ensuring work meets the stringent standards of the Illinois Plumbing License Law.
- Infrastructure Modernization Partner: A trusted contractor for major Illinois utilities and municipalities, enabling local communities to benefit from improved water conservation and reduced utility costs due to increased meter accuracy.
- Advanced Meter Technology: Expertise in installing modern ultrasonic and wireless Smart Meter systems that provide high accuracy and real-time data for both utilities and customers.
- Project Efficiency: Designed to complete large-scale projects, such as a water meter change-out, in a fraction of the time it would take a municipal staff, often taking only about 30 minutes per residential appointment.
- Customer Safety Protocols: Installers are background-checked (often shared with local police departments for verification) and are required to carry official photo identification, drive clearly marked vehicles, and require an adult (18+) to be present for all interior work.
- Accepts Credit Cards: While most services are paid for by the utility, the ability to accept credit cards is noted for any direct payments required.

For Illinois communities and utilities looking for a highly efficient, specialized contractor to manage and execute major water or gas meter infrastructure upgrades, United Meters is a proven choice. Their entire business is streamlined to deliver these large-scale projects, ensuring that their installers—who are licensed plumbers—get the job done quickly and to technical specification. This specialization results in a team that is uniquely equipped to handle the logistical challenges and complex technology of modern metering.
However, for the individual homeowner who is being mandated to have service performed, choosing United Meters is often not a choice, but a requirement of their local utility contract. For this reason, what is worth choosing is a proactive approach: always confirm the identity of the technicians by calling the provided number, ensure a responsible adult is home, and utilize the official channels provided by your municipality or Nicor Gas to address any scheduling concerns or requests for technician credentials before the appointment. By managing the process actively, local users can ensure a smoother experience during a necessary infrastructure upgrade handled by this highly specialized Illinois plumbing contractor. The fact that their installers are licensed plumbers for the connection work provides a critical layer of professional assurance for the technical quality of the service provided.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Today this guy shows up at my door I was on the phone with my mother's Doctor she is in hospice and is not doing well and this guy was ready to just bulldoze into the house was extremely hateful and very inconsiderate, I called the company to complain about them. They didn't even return the call. They seem pretty shady. I can't believe this town hired these people to put in a new water meter and then he gives me a receipt where I can't even read any of the numbers of the previous meter and I hope we don't get charged for water that we didn't use because the guy was pretty. Shady and hateful.
April 19 · Donna SkurkaThis company was hired by the village that i own my home in . They were hired to change out the water meters in the village. I called to set up an appointment and informed them that I am requesting basic information on the technician that will be in my home as I did not hire them . Basic information requested is photo, license number , (if he is not personally licensed) the license number he is working under and his full name. Not only was this request done verbally over the phone was also sent in an email. Also requested was a 15 minute leeway before he arrived as I have dogs and needed to secure them in a separate room. Technician arrived no information was related to him nor any of that information I requested provided to me. As stated this company did work in the village that I live in. As the weeks approached my appointment time, driving through town noticed that this company was digging also without one call tickets. Which is against state law. Do not recommend as this company has proven that they will break the law and leave homeowners in the dark with pertinent information.
January 21 · Stephen HouseThey were hired by the Village. The person who showed up to the business (4-24-23) was polite and professional. He spent about 15 minutes total time to switch the water meter. He offered to show me the meter reading, but that hasn't worked for years. He brought plastic trays in to catch any water during the switch. Neat and clean. Thank you
April 24 · J JBI had an excellent experience with my person that showed up to replace my water meter. He was so professional and courteous. I'd like to write to his boss and give him kudos for a job well done, but I don't have his name.
July 19 · Beth WorleyHorrible, they are a nightmare. Never let this company in your home. They broke my hot water heater and will not come back to even look at it. They also will cancel appointments 15 minutes before they are to come to your house. They have poor customer service representatives. You should not ever call them customer service representatives they just pick up the phones. They are rude and won’t return phone calls. I can’t believe Nicor Gas them to replace our meter.
