Nelson & Sons Plumbing & Heating Introduce
For homeowners and businesses throughout the Iowa City region, plumbing and heating systems are critical components of daily life. When a leak springs, a water heater fails, or a boiler breaks down in the middle of a cold Iowa winter, you need a dependable, local professional to respond quickly and effectively. Nelson & Sons Plumbing & Heating aims to be that trusted partner, offering a wide array of services to keep your water and heating systems running smoothly for both residential and commercial properties.
The scope of plumbing work extends far beyond simple clogged drains. It involves complex systems for clean water supply, safe wastewater removal, and reliable heating. From a minor faucet repair to a complete new construction plumbing installation, the expertise of a seasoned plumber is invaluable. Nelson & Sons Plumbing & Heating is one of the local companies in Iowa City dedicated to addressing these essential needs, ensuring your home or business environment remains functional and safe.
In the world of home and building maintenance, trust is the most important factor when choosing a contractor. You are inviting a professional into your space to handle vital infrastructure. This is particularly true for emergency situations, where swift and correct action can prevent significant water damage and costly repairs. While the company advertises an emergency service, some customer feedback has indicated that the response time for after-hours calls may not always meet expectations for immediate crisis situations. This is an important detail for local customers to consider when planning for unexpected plumbing issues.
The firm's dedication to providing comprehensive plumbing and heating solutions positions them as a key service provider in Eastern Iowa. They cater to both large-scale commercial needs and the specific, detailed requirements of residential clients, which is a testament to the versatility and depth of their service offerings.
Backflow testing is a particularly critical and often mandatory service in the state of Iowa, which the company includes in its offerings. Iowa state plumbing code requires cities with a population of 15,000 or greater, like Iowa City, to enact a backflow prevention program with a containment system. This system is essential to protect the public water supply from potential contamination. Backflow occurs when water flows in the reverse direction—either from backpressure or backsiphonage—potentially pulling non-potable (non-drinkable) water, chemicals, or other contaminants from a customer’s property (like a boiler system or an irrigation system) back into the clean municipal water main. By offering professional backflow testing and repairs, Nelson & Sons Plumbing & Heating helps local property owners comply with state regulations and, more importantly, safeguard the community's drinking water quality.
Nelson & Sons Plumbing & Heating is conveniently located to serve the Iowa City community and the surrounding areas in Eastern Iowa. The central location provides easy access for dispatching technicians to various residential and commercial properties throughout the county.
The physical address for the business is:
3305 Hwy 1 SW #22, Iowa City, IA 52240, USA
Being situated in Iowa City, the firm is well-positioned to assist homeowners and businesses in zip codes such as 52240, 52245, and beyond. This local presence is vital for providing rapid, reliable service to the Johnson County area.

Choosing the right plumbing and heating professional in Iowa City comes down to matching your specific needs with a company’s capabilities and reputation. Nelson & Sons Plumbing & Heating is a locally based option that provides a very extensive list of services, making them capable of handling nearly any issue your home or business might encounter, from small fixture repairs to large-scale commercial installations.
Their proficiency in both plumbing and heating is particularly beneficial in a climate like Iowa’s, where reliable heating (especially boiler repair and maintenance) is a necessity for several months of the year. Furthermore, their explicit focus on backflow prevention—a crucial, regulatory-driven service in Iowa City—demonstrates a commitment to critical infrastructure and public health standards. For many local residents and business owners, the ability to rely on one company for all their water and gas line work, as well as their heating needs, is a significant advantage. The acceptance of major credit cards also simplifies the process of paying for both scheduled projects and unexpected repairs.
However, it is always worth noting that a company's reputation and customer service are as important as its technical capabilities. While some customers have lauded the company's technical work and comprehensive service offerings, other feedback has highlighted challenges with administrative communication and inconsistent emergency response times. Local Iowa customers considering Nelson & Sons Plumbing & Heating for their plumbing and heating needs are encouraged to communicate clearly regarding service expectations, especially when scheduling emergency or time-sensitive work, to ensure a smooth and satisfactory experience. For major projects like new construction or full-scale remodels, their experience in both residential and commercial installation makes them a strong contender for those needing a wide range of services executed professionally.

Nelson & Sons Plumbing & Heating Reviews
If I could give 0 stars I would. I had just gone through a year long fiasco getting a leak fixed and getting all of the repairs made at a house my daughter rents from my mother. The subcontractor had finally finished the vinyl floor and suggested I have a plumber inspect behind the fridge to make sure everything is fine so it wouldn't happen again. I made this clear to the person who scheduled the appointment and to whoever answered my inquiry online. I few days after the plumber left, I was made aware and was sent pictures that the floor had indents from when the fridge was pulled out. I called to let the plumbing office know. Immediately Michelle became defensive and argumentative. I offered to send her the pictures to which she said I could send them, but they wouldn't do anything about it since I didn't have proof. She made a comment about having pictures from the subcontractor which I said I could probably do since he had them. I got those and sent those to her, too, along with a text from the subcontractor saying the plumber should have known vinyl can be damaged and should have used a dolly. The next morning I receive an email back from Michelle telling me they aren't responsible for anything. We should have cleaned out the fridge to make it less heavy and refrigerators have wheels so they can be moved out (with many spelling and grammar mistakes may I add=not professional at all!). She also told me the plumber pulled the fridge out for less than 5 minutes. How do you do an inspection in less than 5 minutes and how does she know? Was she there? Stay far away from a shady company with a rude office manager who thinks blaming customers is good customer service! Oh my favorite part was when she ends the email with take care and stay healthy. ;)
August 07 · Pamela Miller-DeKeyserI had been a customer of Nelson's. I had an emergency Saturday and called their emergency number and no one called me back.I texted and called and never heard from them.I was able to get someone else to help me and avoided a disaster. An hour later, after I had gotten help elsewhere, I texted Nelson's and told them they didn't need to contact me. They should not advertise 24 hour emergency service if they do not provide it. I won't do business with them again.
August 28 · Lynn GallagherMy 75-yr-old mom needed a pressure relief valve replaced on her water heater. The service call went well and the plumber was very polite. She asked for a ballpark estimate and the plumber said he had no idea what it would cost despite it being a simple and common repair. A few days later my mom contacted me stating she received a bill for $400. The labor was $90 which is normal but the pressure relief valve was priced at $302. I had the same work done two years ago and the valve cost $30-40 with labor at $90 totaling $120.I called on a Monday and spoke with a polite woman that said she would have to speak with the plumber who did the install and she would try to get back to me within a couple of days. After two days and no response I called back and spoke with a polite man who said I would have to talk to the woman I talked to on Monday. I told him I already spoke with her and explained my concern about the cost of the valve. He said it didn't seem correct and he promised someone would contact me by the end of day. Didn't happen.I made a 3rd call the following morning and spoke with the same woman and she quickly made the correction to $44 for the valve. She said the plumber needed to be more specific on the write-up. I politely asked her if pressure relief valves ever cost $300 and she said yes, if they were for a boiler. The invoice clearly states it was for a water heater.I'll leave it up to the reader to determine if it was simply poor communication that resulted in a gross overcharge or if it was questionable conduct in an attempt to take advantage of an elderly lady.
September 17 · Peter Van ZeeWe have used Nelson's Plumbing for several years. Last month we had two incidences that they went above and beyond in helping us resolve. First we lost hot water and had a leak in our tank on a Sunday morning They talked us through shutting off the water and came out later that day to insure it was done correctly. They came back first thing the next morning to replace. the tank. Then we had a leak under our kitchen sink. Although they had a busy schedule they managed to slip us in. The office staff and the plumbers are nice and friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend this business.
December 31 · Catherine NepolaWe thought we were out of emergency plumbing options until I stumbled upon a recommendation for Nelson & Sons. They fit us in same-day and were efficient and informative! Great experience with them.
