Backflow Specialty Co Inc Introduce
For Tennessee residents, homeowners, and business operators, the quality and safety of your potable water supply is a non-negotiable priority. This is where specialized plumbing expertise becomes essential. While many plumbers handle a wide range of issues, a company dedicated to the critical field of cross-connection control offers a level of focus and specialization that is paramount for protecting public health and ensuring compliance with local water authority regulations. Backflow Specialty Co Inc is one such focused provider, based right here in East Tennessee, offering comprehensive services centered exclusively on backflow prevention devices.
The core service provided by Backflow Specialty Co Inc is the management of backflow prevention assemblies—devices required by law on many residential, commercial, and industrial properties across the state, particularly those with irrigation systems, fire suppression systems, or certain commercial equipment. The company's business model is built around ensuring these devices are correctly installed, maintained, and, most importantly, tested annually to prevent contaminated water from flowing backward into the clean municipal water supply. This singular focus helps to ensure that technicians are highly proficient and well-equipped to handle all matters related to these vital components of a property's plumbing system.
As a family-owned operation, Backflow Specialty Co Inc emphasizes providing exceptional service and competitive pricing. They are fully insured, licensed, and bonded, ensuring that all work is completed to the highest professional standards. Crucially, their staff includes experienced Tennessee State-Certified backflow testers—the required qualification for legally performing the annual testing and certification services mandated by local water utilities, such as the Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB) in the greater Knoxville area.
The company maintains a full inventory of repair and replacement parts from leading industry brands, including Watts, Febco, Ames, Wilkins, and Conbraco/Apollo. This readiness with parts is a significant advantage, as it often allows their certified technicians to perform necessary repairs and replacements on-site and on the same day as a failed inspection, preventing delays that could lead to non-compliance fines or even service interruptions from the local water authority.
In addressing customer experiences, it is important for prospective clients to be aware of the varying perspectives shared publicly. One customer shared a highly positive account, noting that although they initially experienced some issues with the service, the owner personally intervened. This level of accountability—where the owner immediately addressed the concerns, took full responsibility, and made things right without hesitation—was noted as an exceptional display of integrity and commitment to customer satisfaction. The reviewer stated that this follow-through demonstrated the company's true worth and led them to strongly recommend the business over other local competitors.
Conversely, another review raised concerns regarding service and pricing transparency. This customer, who called for a repair after a backflow system failed a test with the Farragut Utility District (FUD), mentioned an unexpected $75 charge for the re-test, despite informing the company the system had already failed a prior test. Furthermore, the customer questioned the pricing of replacement parts, specifically a seat and plunger seal, which they felt were significantly overpriced compared to retail market prices for a repair kit. This highlights the importance of clear, upfront communication regarding all potential charges, including service fees, testing fees, and the cost of parts, before any work is authorized, allowing Tennessee customers to manage their budgets and make informed decisions.

What is worth choosing
Choosing a highly specialized service provider like Backflow Specialty Co Inc is particularly valuable for Tennessee properties where backflow compliance is a legal and public safety necessity. When you choose a dedicated backflow specialist, you are selecting a team whose expertise is not diluted across general plumbing tasks but rather concentrated on the intricate, regulatory-driven process of water safety. This singular focus helps to ensure that testing is performed accurately, repairs are completed correctly the first time, and your documentation is submitted to the water authority in a timely manner, helping you avoid fines and maintain compliance.
The company’s commitment to carrying a full inventory of backflow parts—a feature mentioned in their own materials—means less downtime for you. In the event your annual backflow test fails, having the parts on hand for immediate repair prevents a lengthy wait for ordered components. This efficiency can be critical, as water authorities often issue strict deadlines for passing re-tests.
While the business has faced public criticism regarding pricing transparency—specifically, charges for re-testing and the cost of replacement parts—the positive feedback highlights a strong commitment to customer service and accountability at the ownership level. The story of the owner personally intervening to rectify an issue speaks to a high degree of dedication to making things right, a quality that is rare and highly valued in the service industry. This suggests that for customers who prioritize strong, accountable customer relations, and for those who take the prudent step of clarifying all service and parts costs upfront, Backflow Specialty Co Inc remains a primary, highly-qualified option for protecting their water supply and meeting state-mandated backflow prevention requirements in East Tennessee.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I initially had a few issues with the service, and I was frustrated at first. However, once the owner became aware of the situation, he personally called me to discuss what had happened. He took full responsibility, addressed the concerns immediately, and made things right without hesitation. In my opinion, that kind of accountability and follow-through says more about a company than never making a mistake at all. It's easy to shine when things go smoothly—it's how a business responds to challenges that shows its true worth.Because of how the owner handled things, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them over any other company in town. That level of integrity and commitment to customer satisfaction is rare and deserves recognition.
July 09 · Anthony ParkerThey know with they are doing and will trick you to pay a huge fee for their service. I called them to repair a sprinkler backflow system that failed FUD test. They told me the service charge is $75 plus parts. When the technician finished the service, he charged me $235. Charges as follows(1) Service charge $75(2) Test charge to report the result to FUD ($75). I was never told that they will charge for testing although I told them the the system failed FUD test.(3) They charged me $80 for a seat and plunger seal. Amazon sells the kit that has 4 sets of these parts with other components for $19. No way they paid $80 for two seal pieces! Another way to make more money!!I called the manager and he did not offer any fair and reasonable resolution.Do not be deceived by them!
August 15 · Khalid AlshibliBackflow Specialty Company needs to work on their professionalism and respect. Very rude, intrusive, argumentative, and unprofessional. If you at all have questions about their process, their go to response is to threaten to shut off your water. I guess we shouldn't ask questions when strangers show up to our doors. Please do better
December 06 · Max BoikeBackflow Specialty is a WONDERFUL Christian, family owned and operated business with high standards for themselves and high expectations from their customers. There is no doubt in my mind that if I need assistance from any one of the employees at Backflow Specialty I am getting the best, most thorough and professional answers/help. The best part of this business is their faith and trust in Jesus Christ. He is the backbone of this business and they openly share that it wouldn't be possible without Him. That in itself describes why this business is as successful as it is and that is why they will always have my business and support.🥰
June 25 · Madison AUpdate: I scheduled my testing with this company once again and they were quick, professional, and got all info entered to comply with KUBs cross connection policies and deadlines. So for 8 years they have been my go to._______________________________We have used Backflow Specialty Company since 2016 for our annual backflow test. They have always been on time, professional, and willing to answer all questions. They also do all the paperwork for KUB so that it gets entered correctly before the July deadline. FYI: The horrible blue glue was there when we bought so not reflective of their work.
